Soccer equals victory mark

The St. Kate's soccer team defeated Gustavus Adolphus College 1-0 on a blustery day in St. Peter. The win raises the Wildcats overall record to 7-6-1 (3-5-1, MIAC). Those win totals (seven overall and three in conference play) equal the most ever in the soccer program's brief eight-year existence.

It did not take the Wildcats long to get on the scoreboard. At the 3:03 mark of the game Kaitlin Kramer cut across the field and headed Kelsey Nistler's corner kick into the back of the net. For Kramer, it was her third goal of the season. It was also the third assist of the year for Nistler.

For the next 87 minutes the team's played scoreless soccer as they battled each other, and mother nature. The strong winds made it difficult to move the ball around effectively. Which meant the Wildcats spent most of the second half playing defense as they struggled to clear the ball effectively against Gustavus and the gusting winds that give them their namesake.

Fortunately for Wildcats, they defended very well all afternoon long. That defensive effort included another strong game for first year goalkeeper Kaylee Schmit. Schmit recorded eight saves while picking up her fifth shutout of the year.

The Wildcats now have four games remaining to try and surpass the all-time win totals. Next up for St. Kate's is a battle with Macalester College. The Scots are currently sixth in the MIAC with a 5-3 conference record, and an 8-6 record overall.
